Sunisa Lee is an American artistic gymnast who has won the ‘Gold’ medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics (All-Around event), the 2019 Stuttgart Artistic Gymnastics World Championships (Team event), and the 2018 Medellín Pacific Rim Championships (Junior) (Team event). Sunisa Lee Facts

Her mother, Yeev Thoj, had named her Sunisa, after her favorite Thai TV actress. She had also given her a Hmong middle name, which she had shortened to the initial ‘N’ on legal documents. The reason that her middle name was shortened to ‘N’ was because her mother had faced years of her name being mispronounced and did not want her daughter to face the same.

When she was 2 years old, her mother had met and started dating a recently divorced man named John Lee who had 2 children from his previous marriage – Jonah and Shyenne. Although the couple never got married, they had raised these kids and Sunisa together. They later had 3 children together as well – Evionn, Lucky, and Noah. Sunisa considers John her father and had later even changed her last name from Phabsomphou to Lee, as a teenager.

When she was 6 years old, she had started getting trained in gymnastics at the Midwest Gymnastics Center in Little Canada, Minnesota, a suburb of her hometown of St. Paul.

Before the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, her parents had planned for her to take a trip to visit Laos, their homeland, which they had fled due to the infamous Vietnam War.

At the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, she had become the first American of Hmong descent to represent the United States at Olympics.

With a total of 6 Artistic Gymnastics World Championships (3) and Olympics (3) medals as of August 2021, she was tied as the 9th most decorated American female gymnast of all time in these competitions.

Suni Lee attended her first Met Gala event in 2021 where she had worn the dress by Sukeina.

In September 2021, Suni Lee participated in the dance reality show Dancing With The Stars where she was partnered with Sasha Farber.

In April 2023, Suni revealed that she was retiring from Auburn University’s gymnastics team after a series of health issues related to her kidneys.
